Starting the Communal Household. The Life of Pëtr Vasil’evich in Otradnoe

  • Grigoriǐ Vasil’evich Verigin

When the spring came, we needed to seek external employment. It was decided that two-thirds of adult workers from every village should look for external employment and one-third should stay back in the village and attend to the household. There were no mills in the villages, and the grain was taken to the towns for grinding. Pëtr Vasil’evich put the question of establishing four steam mills in the districts on the agenda. Everyone agreed and the construction of the mills followed immediately. The mill equipment was ordered and was promptly delivered in four railway carriages. The mills were also constructed very quickly as they were built communally by a few villages. From then, the grains were ground at our own mills.
