Neurobiology of Aging

The image of youth, which continues despite aging, has become a holy grail that seems accessible. However, the cerebral aging continues its course, implying multiple dimensions. Molecular and cellular mechanisms of brain’s aging are accompanied by cognitive changes that have been clearly identified for a long time. But it also appears that aging involves a change in affective and emotional processes. The most remarkable change that has been identified is an emotional well-being that seems to settle with aging. Multiple factors would be at play to explain it. More satisfying social relations, a redefinition of the goals of one’s life with regard to approaching death, a decrease in the frequency of negative emotions, and a different emotion regulation would be the mains. Among all, the advances in the study of brain connectivity by imaging bring promising explanations.
