Coming to Naivasha: Finding a Place to Stay and a Place to Work

This chapter highlights the role of (for instance, gendered and ethnic) inequalities and hierarchies created outside of the Kenyan cut flower industry itself for the mobilization of labour. The chapter starts out with three evocative biographical accounts, which bring the complexity of labour relations and the varying positions of workers to the fore. A description of recruitment processes indicates that flower farms continue to depend on their workers’ translocal networks for attracting new labour, despite the recent formalization of recruitment practices. The chapter furthermore shows that although individual migrants have different preferences and possibilities with regard to employment, their decisions and aspirations for the future together have ensured the industry’s access to a stable and reliable workforce.
