Abstract

Obesity is becoming a global health emergency. The treatment of this chronic disease and its comorbidities is one of the most important items in the health budgets of Western countries (Stevens et al., Popul Health Metrics 10(1):22, 2012; Bult et al., Eur J Endocrinolog 158(2):135–45, 2008). Currently, the only long-term treatment proven to be effective for morbid obesity is bariatric surgery.
