Abstract

In this chapter we treat the basic differences between cultures and their influence on our social behavior and interaction, on education and communication as well as in dealing with intercultural conflicts. Cultures are shaped by geographic, climatic and historical factors and correspondingly diverse. We show possible approaches to understand other cultures in the world. Respect is first and foremost the foundation of building trust. The chapter summarizes also Hofstede’s framework for classifying cultures as a tool to reduce complexity when examining different values and worldviews in managing people. Finally, we are also dealing with specific business issues, such as rituals, gift making and corruption. Numerous case histories complete the information and illustrate the points made.
