Design and Optimization of Epoxy/Glass Fiber Drive Shaft for Passenger Vehicle

Use of composite material resulted in improved performance in the field of automobile engineering. Composites are light in weight and are stiffer compared to conventional structural materials like steel. In this paper, the composite drive shaft is designed and optimised using Teaching Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) algorithm technique. In this work, the composite driveshaft is designed for a passenger vehicle. The optimised composite shaft is tested for critical speed, natural frequency, and torsional strength. The experimental results showed that the glass epoxy composite drive shaft with stacking sequence [54/−54/54/−54]23 and 70% fibre volume fraction gave the optimum weight with great improvement in the performance when compared with the conventional structural steel drive shaft.
