Flood Susceptibility Mapping for Part of Bhima River Basin Using Two-Dimensional HEC-RAS Model
Determination of flood susceptible area is an important task for effective disaster planning. Among all the reported natural disasters worldwide, the flood is about 40% and causes about half of all deaths. It is very important to get an idea about how a flood can propagate with respect to given rainfall conditions or with respect to given releases from a reservoir. In this study, flood susceptibility mapping is carried out for Bhima River basin from Ujani dam to Pandharpur city using HEC-RAS two dimensional model. Unsteady flow simulation is carried out for Flood event 1997 using Implicit Finite Volume algorithm method and Dynamic Wave Diffusion equation. The observed and simulated flood levels are compared at different stations on the river. The performance statistics concluded that simulated flood flows are close with observed flows. The model can be used for flood forecasting, dam break analysis in lower Bhima River downstream of Ujani dam.
