Use of Nahar Biodiesel and Its Blends as an Alternative Fuel in CI Diesel Engine

Abstract

This research work presents the investigation of performance and emission characteristics of a compression ignition direct injection engine when fueled by Nahar biofuel. Pure diesel and blends of biofuel are compared in its 6%, 12%, 18%, 24%, 30% and 36% blends (on a volume basis). The effects of load on brake power, brake thermal efficiency, brake mean effective pressure and specific fuel consumption and emission characteristics as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides have been investigated and presented. Experiments were conducted at a constant speed of 1500 rpm, at a constant compression ratio of 17 and various loads of 0 kg, 3 kg, 6 kg, 9 kg, 12 kg, and 15 kg. The blend B18 has shown improvement in performance characteristics and reduction in emission characteristics as compared with pure diesel. NOx emission of all blends is found more than diesel fuel as an effect of the high viscosity of biofuel.
