History and Future of Robotic Colorectal Surgery

The first prototype robots were developed in the mid-1990s to overcome the disadvantages of laparoscopic surgery, mainly the 2D plane, the rigidness instruments, and the limited degrees of freedom. Current robotic platforms mitigate these disadvantages by providing 3D imaging with enhanced instrument control. We are in unparalleled times for robotic surgical innovation, with new technologies being developed at unprecedented rates. In this chapter, we review the history of robotic surgery along with an overview of the current and future robotic surgical platforms.
