The first reported series of implantation of an ankle replacement was by Lord and Marotte in 1970. They published their initial results in 1973 about a prosthesis that was implanted in 12 patients. The implant consisted of a long tibial stem and polyethylene talar replacing component that required a subtalar fusion. This simple hinge-type design was modeled after hip implants; unfortunately the complex motion and stress across the ankle joint led to poor outcomes.
