Climbing the Parliamentary Ladder: Shirley Williams, 1930–1974

Abstract

Shirley Williams was the most privileged of all the female Cabinet Ministers. As the daughter Vera Brittain, a famous novelist, and George Catlin, a political scientist, she was immersed in politics at an early age, meeting many of the leading parliamentarians. In 1964, she was elected as MP for Hitchin and was soon began her climb up the parliamentary ladder, firstly as Parliamentary Secretary, then as Minister of State for Education and Science and Minister of State for Home Affairs.
