Abstract

Until 1997, only five Labour women achieved Cabinet status. Labour Party women faced a triple handicap: they had to be elected, they needed a Labour Party in government and they needed a sympathetic Prime Minister. This chapter looks at the challenges women faced to gain a parliamentary seat and to reach high office. It ends with a discussion of the sources used to tell the story.
