The Future

  • Susan L. Kemp

This chapter draws together some reflections from our review of the law, mechanisms and challenges of investigation and highlights some issues that are likely to shape the future of UK investigations. Recent experiences show the expense and damage caused to suspects and victims by long delays, difficulties accessing information and piecemeal approaches to investigation mechanisms. This shows the need for prompt crime reporting and thorough investigation and the role of military leadership in bolstering trust in service justice and resisting the resort to “regimental amnesia”. The chapter closes with a plea for apolitical, evidence-based approaches to any reform of the service or civilian justice system.
