Dunhuang’s Infinite Connections with Education

Abstract

Despite the extensive study of Dunhuang’s art, architecture, literary texts, and more, little has been done to make connections with education, both formal and informal. This chapter focuses on this aspect and proposes that Dunhuang offered a powerful, systematic, and sustainable educational system, primarily of Buddhist, Daoist, and Confucian orientation that evolved over its thousand-year history within complex cultural and social contexts. The authors examine its goals of teaching, content, pedagogies, and practical impact. Studying Dunhuang education offers a new lens for understanding the region, gaining insight into its significance, and presenting alternative directions for contemporary Chinese education.
