This and the following chapter look at the works that led up to the writing of Simmel’s final book The View of Life—both chapters look at Simmel as he pursued inspiration for developing his ideas and thinking. Taking Simmel’s book on Rembrandt along with his other writings and letters, this chapter focuses upon the approach Simmel was developing to understanding social life. It looks at the kinds of methodological and theoretical questions that Simmel was asking, revealing how he sought to use art to illuminate the limits of conventional social thought.
