Collaborative Content Authoring: Developing WebQuests Using SlideWiki

Abstract

This paper reports on a study that was conducted to explore the potential of Slidewiki (a newly developed platform supporting crowd-sourced content creation) for collaborative learning in a teacher education context. In this study 143 students (pre-service teachers) used SlideWiki to collaboratively develop a WebQuest according to a set of technological and pedagogical specifications. According to students’ responses to questionnaires, reflecting their perceptions, the vast majority of them liked sharing and co-authoring WebQuests with their group in SlideWiki considering that this process is time saving and urges collaborators to equally contribute to the assigned task. They suggested Slidewiki to be extended with a forum to further facilitate collaboration. They also developed a positive attitude towards Open Educational Resources (OERs) and copyright issues considering that sharing their WebQuests with all SlideWiki users motivated them to try harder and improve their work. Finally, they acknowledged the improvement of their knowledge and skills in learning design.
