Chapter

Abstract

Refrigeration systems are used to lower temperatures by extracting heat. As heat is transmitted from lower temperatures to a higher temperature, work input is required to run the refrigeration system. In this chapter, the thermal modeling of different types of refrigerating systems including the Carnot refrigerator, the vapor absorption refrigerator, the thermo-electric refrigerator, the Stirling cryogenic refrigerator, and the Ericsson cryogenic refrigerator is presented. The objective function for each of the refrigerating systems is derived from the thermal model. The optimization of a derived objective is performed by implementing 11 different metaheuristic algorithms for each refrigerating system. Afterward, comparative results are tabulated and discussed.
