In this chapter, Biao discusses several major debates in China’s history education community since the turn of the twenty-first century. These concern the role of the People’s Education Press (PEP), which had until then a monopoly on nationwide textbook publication, as well as the objectivity of academic points of view used in textbooks. The direct outcome of these debates was a fundamental change to the existing monopoly of textbook production in China, which saw the introduction of books by new publishers, including a controversial new version of secondary school history issued in Shanghai. These debates and controversies at the turn of the century prompted an understanding that, in order to develop, the essential provision of history education must be the communication of truths.
