Introductory Synopsis of the Natural Resources Involved in Food Production

Abstract

Weather, soil, and water are the natural resources that control food production in a certain area. Crops growing season and required irrigation water for crops are dependent on weather conditions. Soils are the medium, in which nearly all food-producing plants grow. Furthermore, water is considered the most critical natural resource for sustainable development in most areas of the world. Sustainable use of soil and water can guarantee the continuity of food production. Implementing crop rotation not only could increase food production, but also could attain the sustainable use of soil and water. Thus, the aim of this book is to review some of the benefits that can be attained from implementing crop rotations. These benefits are the positive effects on soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. Crop rotation can control pests and weeds, increase land productivity, maintain soil sustainability, thus reduces food gaps. Furthermore, alleviation of climate change damage on food production, with respect to loss in crop productivity, rises in crop water requirements, and soil degradation could be done by crop rotation.
