Abstract

This chapter explores the concept of game and relates it to learning by examining parallels between games and L2 learning experiences. Although there are some differences of opinion, most define game as basically a collection of rules, a narrative, or a form of media that is part of larger ecologies of culture, each of which can be respectively related to agency, identity, and community, which in turn links them to L2 learning. The second part of the chapter explores the concepts of game formats, mechanics, and genres, and discusses how each has parallels in L2TL and offers implications for gameful practice. The notion of mechanic in particular is key, because it relates intentioned design to player behavior and dynamic, which may entail learning.
