Chapter 8 KIT: Still Going Strong (but happY Never Existed)
RP used short-lax [ɪ] in many contexts. Today it occurs only before consonants. Elsewhere it’s been replaced with the long-tense FLEECE vowel /iː/ [ɪj], or in closing diphthongs with a glide, [i̯] or [j].
