Chapter 20 Is /l/ Following /r/?

Abstract

In Southern Britain, /r/ is only pronounced when a vowel follows. This is also true of /l/ for many speakers, who use a vocalic sound instead when no vowel follows. In the RP era this was a stigmatized ‘Cockney’ feature, but it’s now more common and accepted.
