Perioperative Nutrition Support in Cardiothoracic Surgery
Abstract
Although nutrition support is a team-based approach, surgeons should be aware of new developments in the identification and assessment of malnutrition, the importance of micronutrients, and evidence-based guidelines for optimal provision of oral, enteral or parental nutrition. A newer definition of malnutrition makes identification easier. Preoperative optimization can be expected to decrease morbidity and mortality. Early postoperative resumption of enteral feeding is encouraged to minimize the stress response, limiting the use of parenteral nutrition to very specific conditions after several days of attempting to optimize enteral nutrition delivery and tolerance. Involvement of inter-disciplinary teams facilitates optimal attention to the perioperative nutritional needs of the cardiothoracic surgical patient.
