Abstract

This chapter starts by raising the issue of the toll that the obvious and pernicious exclusion of Muslim students’ culture (such as the exclusion of Islamic practices in public schools and the absence and/or slanted view of Muslim students’ culture in the curriculum) can take on parents and students. Bourget then examines the curriculum used by each school for the subjects not (typically) offered in public schools, namely Arabic and Islamic studies. During field work conducted in 2016 and 2018, she examined materials used and conducted class observations for these subjects. She shows how the traditional field of Islamic education has been adapted to build both national and religious identities among French Muslim students, and how these classes participate in the making of a French Islam.
