Advantages of the Bag-in-the-Lens Implant

  • Sorcha Ní Dhubhghaill

A new surgical technique, such as the bag-in-the-lens (BIL) technique, presents a new learning curve to the surgeon, and the risks and potential benefits of this should be considered. In this chapter we describe the benefits of taking on the learning curve. While the BIL requires additional surgical steps, namely, a primary posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis, it does confer the benefits of PCO prevention, rhexis phimosis prevention, improved centration, improved rotational stability and exchangeability. These advantages make the lens a good option for paediatric and adult cataract cases alike.
