Abstract

The introduction to this section explores the history of games using a ball, and then analyses some of the sequences used in such games, again drawing on firsthand information from the fieldwork. The dramatic and wordplay elements in the rhymes are discussed, and particular attention is paid to possible underlying meanings in such rhymes as “Fudge, fudge, call the judge” and their interpretation. This is followed by forty-eight examples of the games and rhymes, plus a number of variants.
