Abstract

Muhammad al-Maghout was a unique Syrian free-verse poet and a renowned columnist, who wrote television scripts and a number of successful political plays, especially with the comedian Duraid Lahham, which toured as far as the USA, Canada and Australia. Ali Salem was an Egyptian playwright who succeeded in combing serious intentions with commercialism in comedy, starting with his famous hit The School of Troublemakers. He refined the two major trends in theatre in a way that appealed to the general public, and became king of comedy.
