The Effect of Interfaces on the Radiation Production of Color Centers in Alkali Halides
The changes in optical absorption spectra induced by gamma irradiation of polycrystalline pellets pressed from KCl, KBr, and KI powders have been studied and compared to the spectra of irradiated deformed single crystals. The results indicate that there is an accelerated rate of destruction of lattice defects in the presence of intercrystalline interfaces. In addition, an enhanced production of certain V-centers is observed, which is explained on the basis of the reaction of products of dissociation of water trapped in the interfaces with point defects existing in the interior of the grains.
