Abstract

In the paper I it has been shown that reciprocal space may be arranged in order to obtain accurate phase estimates. If some form of prior information is available its proper use can increase the rate of success of the phasing process. We will show here that several types of information can be exploited. Some of them are hidden in the diffraction data, others can arise from additional sources. Special reference will be made in this paper to the way in which the different types of prior information are exploited by the program SIR88 (Burla et al., 1989a). We will deal with:
  1. a)

    pseudotranslational symmetry

     
  2. b)

    well located molecular fragment

     
  3. c)

    well oriented but misplaced molecular fragment

     
  4. d)

    Patterson information

     
  5. e)

    attended and forbidden domains
