Electromagnetic Bandgap Engineering in Three-Dimensional Periodic Dielectric Structures

Abstract

Recent theoretical calculations of photonic band structures using plane-wave expansion and the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method in three-dimensional periodic dielectric media are reported. Results are given for scalar waves and vector waves. The merits and drawbacks of the two different methods will be discussed. Comparisons with the available experimental results will also be made. The inadequacy of scalar wave calculations for photonic bands will be pointed out.
