Tertiary, further and adult education
Formal education which continues beyond the years when school attendance is compulsory may be described as tertiary or further education. That which is recommenced in later years is adult education. Increasing numbers of adults are now undertaking further study, perhaps after a number of years in employment or time spent caring for a family. Some of the latter will previously only have completed the minimum number of years in school, because of lack of opportunity or in some cases because progress during early years in school was frustrated by perceptuo-motor difficulties. These types of education undertaken after the minimum school leaving age may be academic, vocational or undertaken out of personal interest as a leisure pursuit.
