“She won’t give us a date of birth, her Social Security number, or any other information; we just can’t get a history.” The nurse and the mental health outreach worker were frustrated but concerned. In the shelter, from a distance, “Scarlet” looked almost scholarly: her glasses were balanced precariously on her nose, her greying hair was pulled back severely in a bun, a tailored suit covered her thin frame. She always carried a large stack of books.
