Abstract

Pesticide exposure assessment is a key, dynamic element in contemporary risk assessment. The elements of the risk assessment process include hazard identification and development of dose-response relationships relevant to human health, an experimental enterprise dominated by toxicity testing in animals and the uncertainties of species-to-species extrapolations, exposure assessment in humans directed toward indirect determination of absorbed dose, and relative risk assessment for acute (margin of safety or margin of exposure) or chronic risk (excess cases of illness attributable to exposure). In either case, a health-based standard, such as the no observed adverse effect level (NOEL), provides the biological reference point for human exposure assessments.
