Urinary Excretion of Glycosaminoglycans in Calcium Lithiasis: The Role of Protein Intake

Abstract

It has long been recognized that protein intake may enhance the risk of renal stone formation through an increased excretion of Ca, urate, and oxalate (1, 2). Yet, another rather unknown aspect is the possible influence of animal protein intake on the urinary excretion of inhibitors, and particularly that of glycosaminoglycans (GAG). The aim of this work was to evaluate GAG excretion in stone formers (SF) and normal subjects (NS), as well as to study the effect of several factors, mainly that of a different protein intake on the urinary excretion of GAG.
