Mechanisms of High-Tc Superconductivity

Abstract

A survey is given on various models proposed for the electronic pairing in the new cuprate superconductors. This survey includes the results of the one-electron energy band calculations, as well as studies on electron-phonon interaction. The limits of the validity of energy band theory are discussed, and it is argued that — due to strong correlation effects of the Cu d electrons, the electronic structure is severely modified. This leads to the consideration of magnetic and excitonic momodels for the pairing, which try to take these correlation effects into account.
