Modeling the Growth Kinetics and Substrate Utilization of a TCE-Degrading Microorganism
Development of practical methods for microbiological treatment of contaminated groundwater requires a quantitative understanding of the degradation process. We have developed a generalized model of microbial activity that couples growth kinetics to primary substrate utilization and contaminant disappearance. The model incorporates chemical limiting factors and accounts for the toxic effects of the contaminant itself. It has been coupled directly to an existing model of groundwater hydrogeochemistry and can be used to predict biological activity and contaminant degradation in a contaminated plume.
