Innervation of Immature Muscle Spindles in the Rat

Abstract

Three aspects of the development of spindle nerve supply in the rat soleus muscle are addressed. First, the innervation of developing spindles is described and analyzed in a more systematic manner than was possible in studies (Landon, 1972; Milburn, 1973) which preceded detailed analysis of the neural organization of adult spindles (Walro and Kucera, 1985). Second, whether remodelling of neuromuscular synapses occurs in immature intrafusal fibers similar to that described for developing extrafusai fibers (Thompson, 1986) is investigated. Third, the temporal relationship between the maturation of intrafusal fibers and establishment of fusimotor innervation is examined at different stages of spindle development.
