Size Fractionated Don Release in a Subestuary of Chesapeake Bay

Abstract

Total and low molecular weight (LMW, < 10,000D) DON release was studied in two size-fractions (<1.2 μ and <202μ) in the Choptank River during August, 1990. Nutrient and biomass concentrations, short-term NH4 + uptake and regeneration, and total and LMW DON release were measured every 3 h over 36 h in 20L carboys. DON release was measured by passing water that was incubated with 15NH4 + through a resin which retains inorganic ions, and then measuring the 15N content of the isolated DON.
