Amphipoda of the Galápagos Islands

Abstract

Amphipoda are small crustaceans about 5–10 mm long which look either like shrimps, but lacking the carapace, or like isopods (pill bugs), but mostly flattened from side to side. They are easily identified because they are crustaceans with only 3 pairs of pleopods (swimmerets). Two body extremes are shown in Fig. 1; the rarely expressed flattened form resembles an isopod.
