Recent Developments and Perspectives in ABS Resin

Abstract

ABS is a family of thermoplastics that contains three monomeric units: acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. The versatility of ABS resins in many applications is widely recognized and the world-wide consumption has been gradually increased to nearly 6 billion lbs in 1993. Along vsith the expected increase in demand, a number of ABS makers are expanding production capacity and furthermore, numerous efforts have been made to achieve higher levels of performance, which lead to better mechanical properties and environmental compatibility. Among the various aspects of such activities, it may be of particular interest for most producers to improve the chemical resistance for refrigerator use and minimize or replace the hazardous components involved in flame retardant grade. In addition, developments of ABS based alloys and specialty grades are frequently practiced to meet the diversified needs required in the markets. Technical backgrounds relating to the above issues are briefly reviewed and up-to-date progresses are discussed.
