Electrical Properties of the Phospholipid/Water Interface
The subject of this article is a theoretical study of the behavior of solution ions close to the phospholipid/water interface of charged and uncharged phospholipids. Representative examples from the existing experimental data indicating adsorption of monovalent and divalent cations to phospholipids are presented first. Then the theoretical evidence for spontaneous polarization of water in the layer adjacent to the phospholipid/water interface is given. Finally, a simple model is introduced describing the effect of water polarization on the distribution of ions in the solid/ionic solution interfacial region.
