This chapter considers ways in which cellular automata can be used to perform numerical operations. It is undoubtedly true that any array of general purpose processors is able to implement any numerical operation, given sufficient storage and allowing a sufficiently long sequence of instruction cycles. It is also true that the way in which data are represented in the array and the details of the array architecture strongly influence the efficiency of the array as a numerical processor.
