Abstract

Rhododendron chapmanii Gray (Chapman’s rhododendron) is a highly desirable ornamental shrub which is threatened with extinction due to limited numbers (less than 3000 plants surveyed in the wild) and distribution, habitat alteration and destruction, and illegal collection from the wild. Micropropagation using shoot-tips has produced hundreds of rooted plantlets with minimal impact on existing populations.
