Contribution of Human Stereotaxic Surgery to Treatment and Understanding of Parkinson’s Disease
Abstract
Treatment of the extrapyramidal involuntary movement, especially rigidity and tremor in parkinsonism, has been, and is even today, the main topic in the field of human stereotaxic surgery since its start around 1950. Although the number of the cases of Parkinson’s disease (PD) subjected to stereotaxic surgery has decreased considerably after the development of levodopa treatment, stereotaxic surgical treatment of the disease is still important. It offers a valuable method for improving otherwise untreatable symptoms, when medicine does not work satisfactorily, as well as a valuable opportunity for studying the pathophysiological mechanism occurring in the depth of the brain.
