Abstract

Red blood cells (RBCs) are easy to obtain, their cellular volume is large enough to load high quantities of active substances and their half-life is well defined. Due to their physiological role, they have access to most parts of the body. If transfusion rules are respected they are neither toxic nor immunogenic, and finally they are biodegradable. As largely demonstrated in the past, these properties allow them to be used as drug carriers in important pharmacological applications.
