HTML5 Video and Canvas

Abstract

Up to this point in the book video has been treated as a somewhat static medium. As you have discovered, a video is nothing more than a series of images rendered on screen at a specific rate and the user’s only interaction with the video is to click a control and/or read a transcript or subtitles. Other than that, there really is nothing more for the user to do than to sit back and enjoy the show. With a bit of JavaScript and the use of the HTML5 canvas, you can actually make this passive medium interactive and, more important, transform it to a creative medium. It all starts with that all-important concept: imaging.
