Abstract

The corrosion products discussed in this chapter are the solid materials formed on the surface of a corroding metal. Being a layer between the metal and the environment, corrosion products greatly affect the corrosion behavior of the metal. In general, corrosion products differ in composition, structure, morphology, and properties depending on the specific conditions under which the corrosion process occurs. Based on their effect on corrosion, corrosion products can be roughly divided into two major groups: (i) those having an effect of blocking the anodic and/or cathodic reactions and thus drastically reducing the corrosion rate, and (ii) those having little inhibiting effect or even having an effect of enhancing the corrosive reactions. The corrosion products in group ii are generally thicker, bulkier, and more porous than those in group i.
