Spin Effects in the (e,2e) Cross Sections of Xenon

Abstract

The study of electron atom collisions involving polarised partners have been of major interest in the past ten years. These experiments when analysed using the density matrix formalism reveal the most detailed information on the role of the spin interactions during the process (Bartschat, 89). This experimental technique has been used for the study of elastic (Kessler, 85) and inelastic collisions (Hanne, 83) and only recently in (e,2e) experiments involving a polarised electron beam and/or a polarised atomic beam. The first one involved a polarised electron beam and polarised lithium atoms at intermediate energy (E 0 = 54.4eV) and concentrated on the study of the exchange process (Baum et al., 92). This was followed by a preliminary report on (e,2e) measurements on xenon using polarised electrons (Granitza et al., 93). Quite recently, a relativistic polarised electron beam (E 0 = 300 keV) was used in the K-shell ionization of silver and gold (Prinz et al., 95) and as such focused on the influence of the relativistic interactions.
