Quantum Phase Distribution and Its Determination
The problem of the correct quantum mechanical description of the phase of light has received much attention in recent years. In this paper we wish to examine the questions of what form the phase probability distribution of a pure state of light should take and, having decided this, how the distribution might be determined experimentally. In this way the approach is different from the operational approach to phase used by Noh et al. (1991, 1992) and Fougères et al. (1994) and the results obtained from these approaches would not be expected to be the same, except in the classical field limit.
