Phase Control and Filtering of Resonance Processes by Bichromatic Laser Fields

Abstract

The investigation of resonance processes is a valuable tool to obtain detailed information on the properties of a quantum mechanical system. Usually it is very hard experimentally to seperate the scattering background from the resonance part and therefore the scattering cross sections will not show the pure Breit-Wigner shape. If there are two close-lying resonances, we shall get additional interferences. In a seminal paper by Jung and Taylor1, it has been shown many years ago, that a laser field, described by a linearly polarized plane-wave, could be used to separate the resonant part from the background.
